Cheap Windows Keys Explained: Are They Legit?
What is genuine, what is risky, and how to check before you pay
By Atif H., CEO, AME Enterprise
Microsoft lists Windows 11 Pro at about RM1,299, yet you will see keys for far less. Some cheap keys are genuine licences, and some are not. This guide shows how to tell the difference.
Why prices differ
- Retail vs OEM: an OEM key is tied to one PC and costs less than a retail key that can move between PCs. Both can be genuine.
- Genuine vs misused keys: some very cheap keys are volume or education licences resold to people who are not allowed to use them. These can be blocked later.
- Pirated tools: activators and cracks are not licences at all.
Risks of a very cheap key
- The key stops working or is blocked after a few weeks.
- No invoice, no warranty and no one to contact.
- The key is used on many PCs, so activation fails.
Checklist before you buy
- Does the seller state the key type (retail or OEM) clearly?
- Is there a registered business name, an address and a real contact channel?
- Do you get an invoice and a written warranty?
- Is there a clear return and refund policy for keys that do not work?
- Is the price believable? A Windows 11 Pro key for a few ringgit is a warning sign.

Frequently asked questions
Are cheap Windows keys legit?
Some are, because OEM keys cost less than retail. Very cheap keys are often misused volume licences that can be blocked later. Check the key type, invoice, warranty and seller details.
Why is a Windows 11 Pro key so cheap online?
Prices vary by licence type. OEM keys are cheaper than retail. Suspiciously low prices, a few ringgit, often point to resold volume keys or worse.
How can I check that a Windows key is genuine?
Activate it, check Settings, System, Activation shows Active, and confirm you have an invoice, a warranty and a contactable seller.
What is the difference between a genuine and pirated Windows key?
A genuine key is a licence issued by Microsoft that activates against Microsoft servers. Pirated activators and cracks are not licences and can carry malware.
