How to Check If Your Windows Licence Is Genuine

Three checks that take under two minutes

By Atif H., CEO, AME Enterprise

A cheap key that stops working after a month costs more than it saves. Here are three checks that take under two minutes.

1. Check activation status

Open Settings, then System, then Activation. You should see “Windows is activated” and, ideally, “activated with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account.”

2. Check the edition and licence type

Press Windows key + R, type slmgr /dli and press Enter. A genuine retail, OEM or volume channel appears in the description. Be careful with anything labelled “KMS” or “MAK” from a seller who isn’t a volume licensing partner.

3. Check the seller

Genuine sellers give you an invoice, a clear refund policy, and a way to contact them after the sale. Be wary of keys priced at a tiny fraction of retail, of keys sent without any receipt, and of any seller who asks you to disable antivirus.

If your key fails, don’t keep trying to force it. Contact the seller with the invoice, and ask for a replacement or refund.

We sell original Windows 11 licences with free shipping in Malaysia. Read how we source our licences on our authenticity page, or contact us if you’re unsure whether the key you already have is valid.

Why a genuine Windows licence matters

A genuine licence means your copy of Windows is activated by Microsoft, receives security updates and keeps working after major updates. A key that is blocked, shared with many other buyers or taken from a stolen batch can be deactivated without warning, often weeks or months after you paid. That is why the seller matters as much as the key itself.

Warning signs that a Windows key may not be genuine

  • The price is a tiny fraction of the normal retail price, with no explanation of the licence type.
  • You receive only a key in a chat message, with no invoice, receipt or company details.
  • The seller asks you to turn off antivirus, use a crack, or run a tool to “activate” Windows.
  • The seller cannot say whether the key is retail, OEM or volume.
  • There is no way to reach the seller after the sale.

How to confirm your activation is linked to you

Sign in to your Microsoft account and open the devices page. A genuine digital licence is usually linked to your account and device, which makes reinstalling Windows much easier. If you are setting up a new PC, activate Windows before you start installing work software so any problem shows up early.

Retail, OEM or volume: which did you get?

The licence type decides what you can do with the key later. A retail licence can be moved to another PC (one at a time), an OEM licence stays with the first PC it is installed on, and volume licences are meant for organisations. Our guide OEM vs Retail vs Volume Licence explains the difference in plain language.

What to do if activation fails

Do not try random keys or activators. Write down the exact error code shown in Settings, then contact the seller with your invoice. A genuine seller should replace or refund a key that does not activate. If you bought from us, email helpdesk@cloudsoft.my with your order details and we will help you.
