Office 2024 vs Office 2021 vs Microsoft 365: Which to Buy?
One-time purchase or subscription
By Atif H., CEO, AME Enterprise
Office comes two ways: a one-time purchase, or a subscription. The right one depends on how long you’ll use it and what you need.
Office 2024 (one-time purchase)
You pay once for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on one PC. It gets security fixes but no new features. Good for home users, students and small offices who want a fixed cost.
Office 2021 (one-time purchase)
Microsoft ended support for Office 2021 on 13 October 2026, so it no longer receives security updates. It still runs, but for any new purchase, check the current status on Microsoft’s lifecycle page and prefer a supported version.
Microsoft 365 (subscription)
You pay yearly and always have the latest apps, plus cloud storage and Teams. Better for teams who share files, use several devices, or want continuous updates.
| Office 2024 | Microsoft 365 | |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | Once | Yearly |
| Updates | Security only | Features and security |
| Devices | One PC | Several |
| Cloud storage | No | Yes |
Quick rule: one person, one PC, no collaboration: Office 2024. A team, several devices, always current: Microsoft 365.

Quick decision guide
You want to pay once and keep it simple: choose Office 2024. You collaborate with a team on shared files across phones, tablets and PCs: Microsoft 365 is usually the better fit. You already own Office 2021: it still runs, but because it no longer receives security updates, plan to move to a supported version.
What is included in each version
Office Home & Business 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote for one PC or Mac as a one-time purchase with no subscription. Office 2021 Professional Plus adds desktop apps such as Access and Publisher for business users. Microsoft 365 is a subscription that bundles the apps with cloud storage and online services, and it is updated continuously.
Cost over five years
A one-time purchase looks more expensive on day one, but a subscription keeps charging every year. If you only need the desktop apps on one computer, a one-time licence is usually cheaper over three to five years. If you need several devices, cloud storage and the newest features, the subscription can make sense. Work out how many years you will really use the software before deciding.
Which edition suits students, home users and small businesses?
Students and home users who work on a single laptop are usually well served by a one-time Office 2024 licence. Small businesses that need Outlook email and offline apps can also choose Office 2024. Businesses that need shared mailboxes, Teams and central admin should look at Microsoft 365 or ask us for a business quote.
