How to Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro
Step by step, without reinstalling or losing files
By Atif H., CEO, AME Enterprise
You can upgrade Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro without reinstalling Windows. You only need a valid Windows 11 Pro key and an internet connection. Your files, apps and settings stay in place.
Before you start
- Back up important files. The upgrade is safe, but a backup is good practice.
- Connect the PC to power and the internet.
- Have your Windows 11 Pro key ready. See Windows 11 Pro retail key or Windows 11 Pro OEM key.
Upgrade steps
- Open Settings, then System, then Activation.
- Under “Upgrade your edition of Windows”, select Change product key.
- Type your 25-character Windows 11 Pro key and select Next.
- Select Start when asked to upgrade.
- Wait while Windows upgrades and restarts. This usually takes a few minutes.
- Return to Settings, System, Activation and check that it says Windows 11 Pro and “Active”.
What if the upgrade fails?
- Key not accepted: check the key for typing mistakes and make sure it is a Windows 11 Pro key, not another edition.
- Error code shown: see our Windows 11 activation errors guide.
- No internet: connect and try again. Activation needs to reach Microsoft.
Retail or OEM key?
A retail key can move to another PC later. An OEM key stays with one PC and costs less. Read OEM vs Retail vs Volume Licence to choose, or see what you gain in Windows 11 Home vs Pro.

Yes. Enter a Windows 11 Pro key in Settings, System, Activation, Change product key. Windows upgrades in place and your files, apps and settings stay.
How long does the Home to Pro upgrade take?
Usually a few minutes plus one restart. Keep the PC plugged in and connected to the internet.

On its own, no. Use Change product key to upgrade the edition. The Pro key then activates Windows 11 Pro.
